Lent is a time of fasting and prayer, of much human work and dedication, so that we may be disposed to let the beat of God’s heart and the rhythm of his spirit take possession of ours. Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord. A law which isn’t easy, the Lord never said it would be, on the contrary it is hard and challenging. Why? As the gospel according to St Matthew clearly points out: “Be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect,”. This, my friends, is the challenge which defines us as Christians. We are asked to be perfect, not in the perfectionist sense, no we aren’t called to be demanding or fussy about getting everthing to the last detail. In fact what Christ meant to say is that we ought to love, not only our friends but also our enemies, and pray for them.
